Two Things I Learned Driving Across America

One of the best ways to learn about yourself is to travel and to make yourself uncomfortable. You can only do so much reading and conversing before it becomes essential to set out on the road. This is why I decided to drive across America with my friend Mike. We also decided to only sleep in the van. Mainly because we are poor, but also because we have always wanted to say that we have lived in a van down by the river.

On our journey we met some inspirational people, had great conversations, a few arguments, and saw some of the most beautiful sights that America has to offer.

I learned so many things on my time on the road, about myself and about life in general, and I just wanted to share two of the most important ones in this post.

Motivation is an Illusion

The hair stands up on the back of your neck, you can feel your blood pressure rising, a seemingly uncontrollable energy boils up from the depth of your stomach and spills into your chest, heart, and mind.  The power of motivation is real, but it is not sustainable. If You Aren’t Doing This You Are Screwed

Lewis and Clark departed West from just outside St. Louis in 1804 with the intent of finding a navigable route across the western part of what we now call North America.

They planned on mapping it, making scientific observations, creating trade relationships with the Native Americans, and imposing an American presence in the territory in order to keep the British and French out. These two guys were hard as fuck. Although probably racist. Actually they were definitely racist. But still, they had qualities that we can all learn from.

Squat Better – Be Less Fat

I know you don’t skip leg day. I know you squat. I know you go ass to grass. I know you have perfect form. And by ‘I know’ I mean ‘You are a dirty lying son of a jackal’.

I see this guy at the gym all the time

Without even seeing you squat I have a feeling that it needs some work. Even if you think that you have the squat of a Chinese street vendor you probably don’t. One of the biggest reasons that people do not see strength or mass gains even thought they are preforming compound lifts is that they aren’t preforming the lifts correctly. If you want to keep your back healthy, lift heavy, get bigger, lose weight or any combination of those things than squatting properly is going to help you do that.
